Assistant to Literary Agent

Duration: Full-time, starting May 2020

Location: San Diego, CA

Kelly Sonnack, Senior Literary Agent at one of the leading children’s literature agencies in the US, is seeking a bright, highly motivated and organized assistant with strong communication skills. The ideal candidate is someone who is interested in the world of children’s book publishing and the publishing industry.

 

This position works with the Senior Agent as part of a tight two-person team and supports them in all facets of their business. The assistant will gain exposure to literary agenting in a small office environment, from initial submission and manuscript development, to final publication and career management as well as bookkeeping and contract negotiation.

Responsibilities:

  • General administrative support: mail/recycling, calendar management, filing, office management, errands

  • Coordinate contracts, process financial statements, and prepare invoices

  • Professional daily interaction with clients, editors, art directors, and other publishing professionals and demonstrated self-direction in understanding when and how to respond

  • Daily management of internal databases

  • Support with manuscripts in various stages of development including creating pitch letters, researching potential editors, editing manuscripts, and keeping track of offers and rejections

  • Assist with art portfolio management

  • Stay current with publishing trends, industry changes, entertainment and politics

 

Qualifications:

  • Mastery of email required

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, and familiarity with databases.

  • A mind for numbers in equal measure to a love of letters

  • Top-notch organizational, verbal and written communication skills

  • Excellent memory and time management skills with ability to multitask

  • Adaptive and flexible personality with ability to adjust with a can-do attitude

  • Must be self-directed and independent in a busy environment

  • Able to anticipate needs and deliver timely, relevant solutions and actions

  • Extremely detail-oriented, ensuring their daily responsibilities are executed with accuracy and minimal mistakes

  • 1-2 years administrative experience in professional office environment

  • Must be able to work standard business hours from San Diego office

ABLA Summer Mentorship

Duration: Summer 2020

Location: San Diego, Los Angeles, or Bay Area

The Andrea Brown Literary Agency has a summer mentorship program! This will be a paid, part-time summer program reporting to our Los Angeles, San Diego, or Bay Area office, offering a publishing hopeful an opportunity to work with our entire team on a variety of projects. We are seeking voracious readers, go-getters, and all around enthusiastic and pleasant humans with a demonstrated interest and entry-level knowledge of children's literature. The ideal applicant will be currently enrolled in college or a post-graduate program, a recent grad, or equivalent. We look forward to receiving applications from book-lovers of all backgrounds.

This is a part-time position for 17+ hours a week. Hours in office are flexible but must be between 9am-4pm M-F.
